How to win friends and influence people

If you are a male Wal-Mart associate, it's pretty straightforward.

When a frumpy 40-something lady with no makeup and a massive headache who has just spent the last two hours on breakfast-making, lunch-preparing, hair-brushing, scripture-reading, backpack-packing, note-signing, shoe-finding, carpooling duties happens to come through your check-out line with a package of Sharpies in her cart, all you have to do is look down at her over the rim of your glasses and ask,

"Are you over 18, young lady?  You know you have to be over 18 to buy Sharpies, don't you?"

It's as simple as that.

  1. There are good people in the world who make life so much sweeter just by caring and expressing it in the simplest ways. My little angel of a man is a McDonald's employee. He works in the drive-thru and it is very clear he LOVES his job. He is probably 75 years old. Really. And every time I have seen him he has greeted me and my girls with the biggest smile and a twinkle in his eye. He compliments the girls, tells me how wonderful it is to be a parent, makes a comment to the effect of knowing how tired I must be and that he's sure I'm doing a great job. He wishes us a happy day with a thumbs up, and I am absolutely sure he means it. And, I go to that McDonald's again and again for him. In fact, going through the McDonald's drive-thru used to happen once in a blue moon. Now, we pass through for a drink or a smoothie or whatever about once a week. He is not fast and he holds up the line. And, he is the secret to good business. I asked to talk to his manager one time. She smiled and seemed to truly understand how wonderful he is. A couple of days ago the girls and I decided we should make him cookies and a thank you card. My guess is he's received many already. ;)
